What Does Terroir Mean in Coffee?
Lands Reflected in Flavors

As with wine, terroir makes a significant difference in coffee. Terroir is the influence of soil, climate, altitude, and growing methods on the aromatic composition of the coffee.

Elements Affecting Terroir:

  • Altitude: Slower ripening at higher altitudes = more intense flavors

  • Climate: Day-night temperature difference balances the aroma

  • Soil: Mineral structure, especially volcanic soils, can enhance chocolate & spice flavors

  • Human Factor: How it is grown and processed

For example:
Kenya – Single Origin
Altitude: 1500–1600m
Flavors: Lemon, lime, mango
In beans grown in the high altitude regions of Kenya, this refreshing acidity is directly related to terroir.
