Is it possible to grow a coffee tree at home?

What is a Coffee Tree?

The coffee tree is a plant in the genus Coffea, belonging to the Rubiaceae family. The most well-known species are:

  • Coffea Arabica (Arabica)

  • Coffea Canephora (Robusta)

The most suitable one for growing at home is Arabica , because it has softer leaves, is more compact and is suitable for indoor conditions.

Where To Start?

1. Supply of Seeds or Seedlings

  • You can purchase Arabica coffee seeds or small seedlings online or from a reputable botanist.

  • Starting with seeds is more involved but offers a more holistic experience.

2. Soil Selection

  • Slightly acidic (pH around 6), well-drained, humus soil should be preferred.

  • Potting mix: peat + perlite + coco coir would be a good start.

3. Light and Heat Needs

  • The coffee plant does not like direct sunlight, but it does require plenty of light.

  • Ideal temperature: 18–24°C

  • It should be protected from sudden temperature changes and drafts.

Watering & Maintenance

  • Keep the soil slightly moist , avoid overwatering.

  • In winter, watering frequency should be reduced.

  • Spraying water on the plant's leaves creates a tropical feel.

When Does It Bear Fruit?

  • Under suitable conditions, the coffee plant blooms in 3–4 years .

  • White jasmine-scented flowers develop into reddish fruits (cherries).

  • There are 2 coffee beans inside each fruit.

Why Is It Worth Trying?

  • Growing a coffee tree at home is not only decorative but also a meaningful journey of patience.

  • Growing and roasting your own beans is a true “craft” experience.

  • It deepens your connection with coffee and makes you respect the process.

A Note from Imesta Coffee:

We don't view coffee simply as a beverage. We want to recognize its nature, roots, climate, and character, and honor all the stages it goes through before reaching the cup.
You can be a part of this journey by growing your own coffee plant.

Little Tips:

  • Repot the plant every 2 years as it grows.

  • If the leaves are turning yellow, you may have overwatered them.

  • You can support it with liquid fertilizer in the spring.

Let your coffee be a friend you nurture, not just one you drink.
