Guide to Brewing Coffee with a French Press

Step-by-Step Methods for a Perfect Cup

The French Press is known in the coffee world as a practical and flavorful brewing method. Especially when used with lightly roasted coffees , it prevents bitter and roasty flavors and delivers a balanced cup. Whether you're at home or in the office, these simple steps will help you create consistent, delicious coffee every time.

1. Preheat the French Press

Pour hot water into the French Press, let it sit for a few seconds, then drain the water. This step preheats the equipment, helping to maintain the coffee's temperature.

2. Coffee Measurement

Weigh the coffee using a precision scale. The general dosage is: 65–70 grams of coffee / 1 liter of water . You can adjust this amount according to the type of coffee you'll be using and your taste.

3. Grind the Coffee

The grind should be similar to filter coffee or slightly finer. A too coarse grind can make the coffee sour and weak, and sediment isn't completely eliminated. Remember that some fine particles will always be produced during grinding.

4. Add Water

Place the French Press with the coffee on the scale and zero the scale.

  • Add boiling water by measuring (1 litre / 963 g).

  • Make sure the coffee is completely wet: First add half the water, stir, then add the remaining water.

  • The cap or piston is not used at this stage.

5. Brewing Time

Let the coffee brew for 4–5 minutes .

6. Stir the Coffee and Skim the Foam

Before the brewing time is up, stir the coffee down to the bottom with a spoon and stir gently 3–5 times. Remove any light-colored foam that forms on the surface; this step ensures a cleaner, clearer cup.

7. Press with a piston

Once you've frothed, replace the lid and plunger. Press the plunger gently; a steady press is essential for a sediment-free cup.

8. Wait Before Pouring the Coffee

Wait 1–5 minutes after the plunger is released. This allows the sediment to settle to the bottom, giving the coffee a cleaner flavor. When filling a glass or thermos, stop pouring when sediment begins to appear.

9. Service and Cleaning

Let the coffee steep until it reaches a drinking temperature and enjoy. Clean all parts of the French Press after use; clean equipment means maximum flavor in every cup.
