Pour Over and Filter Coffee Brewing Guide
Tips for the Perfect Coffee
One of the most enjoyable ways to brew coffee is through the pour-over and filter coffee methods. When used correctly, it's possible to achieve clear, balanced, and flavorful coffee. In this article, we'll cover the steps you should take into consideration and the most common mistakes when preparing coffee with both a pour-over and a filter coffee machine .
It is time to say goodbye to “bitter” or “weak” coffees.
Coffee & Water Ratio
Our baseline metric for both methods is:
👉 65 grams of coffee / 1 liter of water
In this recipe, we prepare 0.5 liters of coffee , so 32.5 grams of coffee will be enough.
Pour Over Coffee Brewing Steps
-
Prepare the Filter
Place the paper filter inside the dripper and rinse it with hot water. This step removes the paper taste and preheats the equipment. Don't forget to pour out the water. -
Measure and Grind the Coffee
Weigh 32.5g of coffee on a precision scale. A medium-fine grind is suitable for pour-overs. If you're brewing a smaller amount, you can use a slightly finer grind. -
Add Coffee
Pour the coffee into the filter and shake it gently to level the surface. -
Reset Your Scale
Place the brewing container on the scale and zero the scale. -
Blooming (Pre-wetting)
Start the timer and pour 60g of hot water over the coffee. Then gently stir with a spoon to ensure all the coffee is wet. -
Main Brew
-
Add water every second, for a total of 200g. Then continue pouring in a circular motion until you reach 500g of water.
-
Brewing Time
The total time should be 2-2.5 minutes . Add an additional minute after the water has completely drained. If the time is too long, the coffee will be bitter (try a coarser grind). If it is too short, the coffee will be weak and sour (try a finer grind). -
Final Mixing
Once the brewing is complete, gently stir the coffee and serve.
Brewing with a Filter Coffee Machine
-
Insert the filter and rinse it with hot water.
-
Grind 32.5g of coffee and add it to the filter.
-
Turn on the machine. When the first water drips, gently stir the coffee.
-
Once the water has drained completely, stir the coffee and serve.
Brewing time for filter coffee usually takes 3 – 3.5 minutes .
Final Touches
-
Cleaning your equipment is always important. Uncleaned equipment can make your coffee taste bitter and stale.
-
Correct grind, correct ratio and clean equipment → consistent flavor in every cup .
